DAWN OF THE SAVIOR

EEP Project, Spring 2022

Book Cover Design, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator

Dawn of the Savior is a high fantasy novel written by C.J. Quinn. The story follows two characters from very different walks of life, who’s lives slowly intertwine without them knowing it. They are faced with a choice that does not seem fit for people like them: either die with the rest of the world, or die trying to save it. To complete this project, I completed a photoshop certification class and worked with a mentor to refine the final result.

CONCEPT SKETCHES

The first step of the process was sitting down with the author and throwing around some rough ideas. She explained the plot of the book and shared key points, as well as significant symbolism throughout the story. We decided that the sword in the story would best allude to what the book was about to grab a potential reader’s attention on the shelf.

TYPEFACE SELECTION

The author and I decided that a modern yet medieval typeface would best fit the feel of this high fantasy novel. I pulled some of these serif typefaces that had the old school feel with a modern twist.

GATHERING IMAGERY

The author provided an idea of how she wanted the sword to look, and I found and purchased a stock image to best reflect the initial idea. The most important part of the sword was the detailing on the hilt. It needed to match the modern, high fantasy theme of the book. This was the chosen image.

WORDMARK IDEATION

These were a few of my initial concept sketches for the word mark. When starting to digitize, I had the idea to integrate the smoke-like magic within the words which was the concept I ended up choosing.

TYPE IMPLEMENTATION

This was the base behind integrating the swirling magic with the text. To give the title of the story more depth, I beveled the text and gave it a bit of a smoke overlay to appear as if it is coming from the smoke.
